Description: The Wood Spirit is a mythical man said to be the Lord of the Forest and Natural Things. Seeing one will bring health, happiness and good fortune. According to legend, a Wood Spirit is extremely strong, can tear an opponent limb from limb, and can tame a ferocious dragon or skittish unicorn. At the same time, they are gentle with the maidens, children, and men of good heart. It is said that Europeans go out on Wood Spirits hunts to bring good fortune to their villages. Most sightings are by children or by the pure of heart.

A Wood Spirit combines the human face and nature into one image. This Wood Spirit’s exaggerated features and hair are burnt (pyrography) into a piece of light oak. His flowing hair turns into a leaf, his nose is broad and flat, his eyebrows arch high into his forehead, and his long beard tapers down the similarly tapered piece of oak. The bark of the oak tree was left intact on the back of this piece and if you look close, you will see the Wood Spirit burnt into the back as well.
